I’m not a morning person; I find getting out of bed in the morning really difficult, especially in these cold winter months when my bed is sooooo warm… I don’t have much difficulty actually getting to sleep – my boyfriend will tell you I can pretty much nod off anywhere -, however I think that my sleep is actually quite restless, which is why I tend to feel so tired in the morning.
I’ve been trying to take a bit more time to wind down before I go to bed, to help me get a more restful night’s sleep… I’ve been using the Lush Sleepy Body Lotion for several months now, and have found that the ritual of applying the lotion and the aromatherapy element (lavender and tonka) of using the product have really helped. It’s intended to be applied all over the body before bed-time, and costs £7.95 for a 95g tub, or £13.95 for 215g. I do love Lush, however sometimes their ingredients aren’t perfect and many people do accuse them of “greenwashing”, so I decided to see if I could find a more natural alternative to replace my beloved Sleepy at bed-time.
I’ve seen a few different bed-time balms, creams, sprays and lotions on the green beauty market, however opted to give the Kiss the Moon After Dark Balm in Dream a try first. It comes in a 12ml pot – so only about the size of a lip balm – and costs £16 from LoveLula. Unlike the Lush Sleepy Body Lotion, this balm is only applied to a few pulse points on the body, such as the temples and wrists. The Dream blend consists of lavender, bergamot, cedarwood and chamomile, which help to send you off to sleep and are also great for soothing the skin.
So how does it compare to the Lush body lotion? At £16, I do find the Kiss the Moon balm a little expensive… however considering the amount you need to use each night, it should last a good while. In terms of the smell, I don’t find the Kiss the Moon balm very strong smelling at all – even when applied to the pulse points -, whereas the Lush lotion is a lot stronger in smell and I must admit I’m totally in love with it… it’s lavendery but somehow makes you smell a bit like a ginger biscuit! I do, however, really like the ritual of applying the Kiss the Moon balm… massaging it into your temples at night is really relaxing and I have certainly felt more rested when using it.
All in all, I would definitely recommend the Kiss the Moon After Dark Balm, however I do like to use it alongside either burning or spraying some lavender oil before bed for the extra aromatherapeutic effect. I must admit that I’d still be tempted to purchase the Lush Sleepy Body Lotion again in the future (mostly for the smell), however it’s been interesting and fun to see what greener options are out there. Kiss the Moon have four different aromatherapy blends – Dream, Calm, Glow and Love -, and have various other products for use before bed including face oils, candles and bath salts. Their products are certified cruelty-free and vegan.
