It can be really hard not to create waste when you’re on the move; a quick coffee here, a dash to the supermarket there, and before you know it you’ve left behind a trail of single-use packaging and plastics. In order to minimise my day-to-day environmental impact, I always make sure I’m carrying these essentials in my handbag:
- Stojo Cup: This is one of my all-time favourite purchases as it’s just so clever and handy! Stojo‘s awesome coffee cups are collapsible and leak-proof, so they’re really easy to transport… you can simply finish your drink, fold it down and pop in the stopper, making it compact enough to fit in your bag without even having to rinse it! I have a “Biggie”, their 16oz offering which comes complete with straw (perfect for iced drinks in the Summer!), however they also do a 12oz size, both in a variety of colours. I purchased mine in-store at Steamer Trading Cookshop for £15.00, however they’re available from a variety of online retailers including Amazon.
- Chilly’s Bottle: I asked my boyfriend for a Chilly’s Bottle for Christmas last year, and I don’t think I’ve been anywhere without it since! Up there with my Stojo cup as one of the most useful things I own, I’ve had loads of comments on the pretty pattern and have been recommending them to anyone and everyone all year. Their standard 500ml bottle comes in a huge variety of colours and patterns at £25.00, however they also have a range of 260ml or 750ml bottles, as well as a variety of tumblers and food pots in a more limited selection of patterns. Their bottles can be used for carrying both hot and cold drinks, so an awesome accessory all year round! Again, they’re available from a variety of retailers, including Amazon.
- Folding Shopping Bag: My shopping bag is now super old and battered (a present from my auntie when I was a kid, which I then turfed out again as an adult when I realised how useful it was!), but I still love it and carry it in my handbag at all times. Living on my own, I tend to shop little-and-often, and quite often that’s when I’m on the way home from work or a day out… having this little bag with me means I don’t have to worry about wasting unnecessary plastic carrier bags. There are a huge variety of folding shopping bags available on Amazon (including some cute little strawberry ones similar to mine!), but I also totally love this one from Lakeland, which I spotted recently!
- Produce Bags: These are a recent addition to my handbag, but have already proved to be incredibly useful! I have these Carrinet Veggio bags which were £6.99 for five from Amazon, but there are a huge variety of produce bags available on the internet and in stores. You can pop them all inside one bag for easy storage, and they’re particularly handy if – like me – you’re usually only cooking for one or two people and only need a small amount of fruit or veg at once. It saves me wasting a bunch of the little plastic bags they offer in supermarkets, or otherwise attempting to weigh a load of loose apples or carrots at the tills… hopefully, if enough of us buy all our fruit and veg loose, it will encourage supermarkets to stop selling them in single-use plastic all together!
There are so many more amazing waste-minimising and handbag-friendly products out there – including this beautiful bamboo cutlery set I’ve had my eye on from LeaveNoTraceLds on Etsy -, but these are just the few I carry at the moment.
